Over fifty people took part at a demonstration for peace in the Holy Land at Annakisha Church on November 24, 2024.
The event was organised by Killavullen Pastoral Council in conjunction with Trócaire.
It took place on the Cycle Paths of the new section of the N73 which had opened on the previous day. The N73 had been closed to traffic since the Autumn of 2023, about the same time that the conflict in the Holy Land escalated.
The meeting began with a Prayer Service for Peace. It included a statement from Caoimhe de Barra, the CEO of Trócaire, read on her behalf by Fr Eugene Baker, its Cloyne Diocesan Director for Trocaire.
It called for “arms to be laid down, for hostages to be returned home and for the people of Gaza to be supported with humanitarian aid.” In his own remarks, Fr Baker added that the day’s solidarity demonstration would in some small way contribute to the building of Christ’s Kingdom of peace with justice. During the Prayer Service each participant lit a candle for peace at the altar before setting off on the walk. Fr Gerard Condon thanked all who took part for their generous donation of €1650 to the humanitarian relief work of Trócaire in Palestine.
